If you run a small business from home, the Vastu question has two halves: where in the home the work should happen, and how to stop work from taking over the rest of it. Popular advice puts the desk in the north, east or north-east of the home, facing north or east, with stock in the south-west or north-west. That is modern. The classical texts do not speak of home businesses, and the useful guidance is mostly about separation, light and a quiet corner.

What the classical texts offer

The Brihat Samhita’s four-room verse (53.118) was written for a house with halls for worship, cooking, stores and treasure. It puts the treasury and the granary in the north-west, which is the nearest thing to a place for money or stock. It does not describe a study, a desk or a workshop. The Manasara, as we read it in summary, lists a study among the buildings of a large dwelling without a direction.

So everything below that names a direction for a desk is a modern convention. The room-by-room guide shows how the same pattern holds for the study and the other rooms that the verses do not name.

What matters more than direction

A home business is a business and a home at once, and the main risk is that each spoils the other. These points do more good than a corner.

  • A defined place. Even a small table that is only for work helps. When you leave it, work ends.
  • Light and posture. A window to the side of the screen, a chair that supports you, and a screen at eye height are worth more than any facing. Take breaks.
  • Boundaries in time. Set hours. Clients and your family both benefit.
  • Clients. If clients visit, think about the route from the door, the seat, privacy, and whether the house is quiet enough. Meet them in the living room or a small room near the entrance, so that they do not walk through bedrooms.
  • Deliveries and stock. Keep stock off beds and out of the kitchen. Store it in a dry cupboard, a utility room or a rented unit.
  • Noise. Keep calls and packing away from sleeping hours.
  • Food and health rules. If you cook or handle food for sale, or see clients for treatment, check the rules and licences that apply to your place, and check what your home insurance or lease says.
  • Records. Keep invoices, tax papers and contracts in one safe place.

A practical checklist

  1. Choose the quietest corner with daylight, whatever its direction.
  2. If you can, set the desk where you face east or north, as a free preference.
  3. Sit with a wall or a cupboard behind you if you can.
  4. Do not place the desk under a heavy exposed beam.
  5. Keep the bedroom for sleep. If the desk must be in the bedroom, put it away from the bed and cover it at night, or screen it with a bookshelf.
  6. Keep the cash box and papers in a locked drawer.
  7. Keep the centre of the home free, as in the brahmasthan guide.
  8. Tidy the work area at the end of each day, as a closing ritual.

Flats and rented homes

Most home businesses are in flats, many of them rented. Your freedom is the arrangement of your own furniture. Do not drill, rebuild or paint without permission from the owner or society. Check the building’s rules on running a business from a flat and on visitors, because some forbid it. The apartments guide explains what carries over from Vastu to a flat and what does not. A consultant who tells you to move a wall in a rented flat has not read your lease.

A bedroom desk, and the sleeping rule

Many people work in the bedroom because there is nowhere else. The classical rule about sleeping, head to the south or east and not to the north or west (53.124), is unrelated to desks. The practical advice is to protect sleep. Keep the screen out of sight at night, keep work papers off the bed, and let the room be a bedroom first. The bedrooms guide says more.

What cannot be changed, and what helps

You cannot change which room is the smallest, which window faces which way or where the plumbing is. You cannot turn a flat around. Nothing in the verses we read asks for it.

What helps is almost free. A small, tidy, well-lit work corner. A routine that starts and ends the day. A clear doorstep for clients. A plant or a lamp on the desk if you like, with the expectations set out in the plants guide. And if you want an auspicious start, many people begin a new venture with a short prayer or a first-day ritual, which is a custom and needs no object. The remedies guide explains how to think about offered fixes.

A word on promises

No placement of a desk will promise customers. If a consultant says your orders are slow because of a corner, ask for the verse and ask what else has been looked at: your offer, your price, your marketing and your hours. For money worries, a financial adviser is the right person, and for stress, a doctor or someone you trust.

Frequently asked questions

↳ Which direction should I face while working from home?

Modern advice says east or north. No classical verse we read gives a rule for desks, so it is a free preference. A window to the side and a wall behind you matter more.

↳ Where in the house should a home business be?

Popular advice suggests the north, east or north-east. The best place in practice is the quietest corner with daylight that keeps work separate from sleeping and cooking.

↳ Can I run a business from a bedroom?

You can, but sleep suffers when work shares the bed's space. Keep the desk away from the bed, screen it at night and keep papers off the bed.

↳ Where should stock be kept in a home business?

Modern advice says south-west or south for heavy stock. Practically, keep stock dry and out of living and sleeping spaces, in a cupboard, a utility room or a small rented unit.

↳ Do I need to change my flat for a home business?

No. In a rented or shared flat you control only your own furniture, and changes to the structure need permission. Choose a quiet, bright spot and keep to a routine.
