The kitchen is where most people first meet Vastu, because the advice is specific and easy to act on, and where it most often turns anxious, because nearly every flat has its kitchen where the builder put it. This checker takes nine facts about your kitchen and sorts the advice into three kinds that are usually blended together: what a classical text says, what modern Vastu has added, and what is simply sensible in any kitchen. Nothing is predicted and a kitchen in another corner is never called a fault.

What it asks

The first two questions are classical. Where is the kitchen in the home, and is there water in the south-east? The Brihat Samhita places the kitchen in the south-east (53.118) and cautions against water there (53.119), because the south-east belongs to Agni, the fire, and the two should not share ground. Those are the only classical statements about a kitchen in the verses read for this site, which is why only two questions are classical.

Five questions are modern: the stove’s corner inside the kitchen, which way the cook faces, whether sink and stove are kept apart, whether the kitchen door faces the main door, and whether a toilet shares a wall. They are conventions of present-day Vastu with an internal logic, and no verse we could cite.

Two are practical: whether the kitchen is ventilated and whether the gas shut-off is easy to reach. They are not Vastu rules at all. They are here because they matter more than any direction.

How the answer is worked out

Each answer is compared with a small table in the page’s script. For the kitchen, the classical column marks the south-east as the placement and the modern column adds the north-west, east and south as accepted second choices and the north-east and south-west as the ones guides are cautious about. For the stove, the south-east of the kitchen is the preferred corner. For the cook, east is preferred, north and west accepted, south advised against.

The result lists every point under its own heading, shows whether it lines up or differs, and gives a count for each kind, such as “1 of 2 classical points line up”. The count is a tally and not a grade. The practical points are shown first because they have the strongest case, then the classical ones, then the modern.

A point that “differs” is shown calmly. In most homes several will. The result says so, and it never links a kitchen detail to health, money, family harmony or safety in the sense of fate.

Where the sources differ

The south-east is classical. The north-west as the second-best position is modern and is not in the verses read. In the Brihat Samhita’s list of the 32 entrance padas, the south-east corner square is given to the wind, Anila, and the north-east corner to Shikhi, a name of fire, so the kitchen rule and the pada list do not use the same naming. Some modern guides give the kitchen to Venus, since Venus is often placed in the south-east, while another scheme gives Venus the north. The kitchen article sets all this out, and the directions article explains the quarters.

If your kitchen is not in the south-east

It probably is not, and that is an ordinary situation. The classical sources do not describe a consequence for it. Before spending anything, take three calm steps. Check the layout inside the kitchen: if the stove can sit towards the south-east or east side and the sink towards the north-east, that is free. If the cook can face east while working, that is free too. And leave the rest alone. Moving a kitchen or demolishing a wall to correct a direction is expensive and disruptive, and none of the texts read here asks for it. The page on remedies without demolition is the one to read before any spending, and the apartments page explains what carries over to a flat.

To read the direction of your kitchen, use the phone compass from the middle of the home. For the other rooms, the room placement guide keeps the classical and modern columns apart in the same way.

What it cannot do

It cannot see your kitchen. It cannot judge gas fittings, wiring or fire safety, and it is no substitute for a qualified fitter. If you smell gas, open the windows, switch nothing on and call your gas supplier or the emergency number. It makes no claim that a kitchen’s position affects anyone’s health or fortune.

Frequently asked questions

↳ Which direction is best for a kitchen in Vastu?

The south-east. The Brihat Samhita places the kitchen there (53.118), the quarter of Agni, the fire. The north-west as a second choice is a modern addition. A kitchen in another corner is an ordinary case.

↳ Which way should I face while cooking?

East is the usual modern advice. It is a convention and not a classical verse, so it is shown under modern points. If your counter allows it, it costs nothing, and if not, it does not matter.

↳ Why should the sink and stove be apart?

Modern Vastu keeps fire and water apart, and it is sensible for any kitchen, since splashes near a flame are a nuisance and a risk. A short stretch of counter, a board or a splash guard between them is enough.

↳ Does a kitchen in the wrong place cause problems?

The texts read for this site do not say so, and this site makes no such claim. Modern guides do, without a verse to cite. Good ventilation and safe handling of gas matter far more than direction.

↳ Should I rebuild my kitchen after using this checker?

No. Nothing here asks for it and no classical text read for this site does either. Start with what is free: the stove's place in the room, the cook's facing, ventilation and order.
